Self Discovery thru Singing with the Perfectly Imperfects

Regardless of previous experience, skills or abilities…

For the past 13 years, the Perfectly Imperfects have been passionate about creating a safe space to nurture and empower older adults while they gain the confidence needed to explore their desire to sing, move, and act in their own ‘perfectly imperfect’ way. Through the process of building our original theatrical shows that weave story, song and movement, we support each other to be healthy, purposeful, engaged and active. The result is our gift of joyful entertainment as well as connection for and with the larger community.

In this session, we continue to build our new show that celebrates songs from the 1950s. Our performances will be on April 4 - 5, 2025… in our very own Alberta Afternoon format - a simulated live radio broadcast with commercials, songs, movement, and skits.  Reading music, dance, acting and/or previous experience is not required – only a commitment to the group and a willingness to explore the possibilities!

Please note: We do not use sheet music, but instead, we use lyric sheets and audio tracks to learn the songs.

Dates: Mondays, Jan 6 - Mar 17, 2025 (no class on February 17) + Fridays, Feb 21 - Mar 21, 2025
Time: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Place: Mondays - Phoenix Room @ Dalhousie Community Assoc./Fridays - Sanctuary @ McDougall United Church

Explore Your Voice with Our Celtic Choir

Self Discovery thru Singing

What happens when you weave a Celtic choir with Explore Your Voice?

Within a small community of supportive people, this 10-week class offers a safe space to begin to discover, reclaim and strengthen your unique voice through singing. As each member of the group begins to apply the exercises and teachings to 7-8 Celtic songs chosen as a group, we will learn from each other.

Whether singing a solo, in a duo, trio, quartet, or simply as a support of others in the group, participants are encouraged to sing where they feel comfortable and are supported to take risks. As we work on the songs at a deeper level than most choir experiences permit, we also deepen our understanding of singing, breath, how to support our voices more fully, and how to navigate our fear of singing in front of others. During this process, we are also invited to take the learnings and apply them to our lives.

We will continue to work on the same songs through the spring session and will be performing our 30-minute set of songs at the Water Valley Celtic Music Festival on
Saturday, June 14, 2025.

If you or someone you know enjoys Celtic music and has always wanted to sing… even if you hold the belief that you may not have skills and/or talent… please know that you are welcome. I am passionate about teaching voice and look forward to supporting your exploration in our Celtic Choir during our winter session!

Please note: We do not use sheet music, but instead, we use lyric sheets and audio tracks to learn the songs.

Dates: Thursdays, Jan 9 - Mar 20, 2025
Time: 10:30 a.m - 12:00 p.m.
Place: Dalhousie Community Association in the Sunrise Room
Cost: $125.00* plus GST ($131.25) for Ten 90-Minute Classes
Total Spaces Available: 14
Spaces Left: 2

What past participants have said...

"There is no better way of staying in the present than getting out of your head and returning to your physical senses. Alison has taught us through dance, breathing, awareness and exercises to be in our bodies, to search for and hopefully dissolve the blockages of the past that are inhibiting us in song as well as in life. Throughout this journey Alison has gently guided us, molded us into a strong, supportive yet tender group of dear friends. Learning to sing is just the bonus. Who thought I could learn so much more at 82..... Thank you, Alison." -HJ

"I have always wanted to sing but had no confidence in my ability. Alison's encouragement, enthusiasm, help and gradual challenging you to do more than you thought you could do, has helped me a great deal. Singing in our group has become more enjoyable." - DD

No session on February 16 & March 16
Location: TBA

Most instruments are an extension of who we are but when we sing, our body is the instrument. There is so much joy in singing and yet, our fear of being seen has many of us confined to singing in the shower or in our cars where others will not hear us.

Exploring movement, breath, relaxation, vocalization, guided meditation, and self discovery exercises within a safe and supportive community of fellow travellers, I invite you to take your first steps on the journey of self discovery & transformation through singing.

Self Discovery in the Annual Garden: Planning

Self Discovery & Transformation through Gardening

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Online

In the first of four programs in the Self Discovery in the Annual Garden Series, we explore what tasks and resources are needed to complete the first step in having a successful annual flower garden. Planning involves examining what is in your existing garden, creating a wish list for how you would like to transform your garden, and finally, considering ten aspects that will support you in creating your design. Using the garden as  a metaphor for our lives, we will use the same principles for Self Discovery.
